Don’t reinvent the wheel, sage advice, which I think is apt when someone else writes an article that is appropriate to share. Liam Friary wrote the following editorial for Cycling Journal New Zealand ( Vol 23 Summer /Autumn 2025). More often than not we don’t acknowledge to ourselves the benefits we gain by this simple pursuit; this editorial gets to the essence of what riding bikes brings to our lives.
‘ Cycling into consciousness is a transformative journey that extends far beyond the physical act of pedalling. As we venture out on two wheels, we open ourselves to a unique form of meditation in motion.
The rhythmic rotation or our legs, the steady cadence of our breathing and the ever-changing landscape before us, creates a symphony of sensory experiences that grounds us firmly in the present moment. These moments speed by far too often in our fast-paced life off the bike. Being present in these moments helps etch them into our memory forevermore.
Long, challenging rides serve as a metaphor for life’s journey; teaching us valuable lessons about perseverance, self-reliance, and the beauty of slow progress. It’s a far cry from the everything-at-pace mentality that the modern age demands of us. As we climb steep hills, battle headwinds or navigate tricky terrain, we’re forced to confront our limitations and push beyond them. These moments of struggle and triumph on the bike often lead to profound self-discovery and a deeper appreciation for our own resilience.
Perhaps most importantly, cycling offers a much-needed escape from the relentless pace of modern life. We are so much more than sedentary beings scrolling on our phones and working away at laptops. In a world dominated by constant connectivity and instant gratification, the simple act of riding a bicycle allows us to disconnect and reconnect- with ourselves, with nature and with the fundamental joy of human-powered movement. As we pedal through diverse landscapes, from urban streets to remote countryside, we’re reminded of the beauty and vastness of our world- and our place within it. This shift in perspective can be profoundly rejuvenating, helping us return to our daily lives with renewed energy, clarity, and a heightened sense of what truly matters.’ https://www.nzcyclingjournal.com/
